‘Petition against JAMB Registrar, UNILORIN VC Must Be Investigated’

                                              JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede The University of Ilorin chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and an anti-corruption group, Movement for Corruption-free Nigeria (MOCON) have maintained that the petition of financial impropriety submitted against the immediate past vice chancellor of the university and Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede and his successor, Professor A.G. Ambali must be thoroughly investigated. In separate chats with newsmen, on Friday, the groups maintained that the petition, which was submitted at the Ibadan office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Thursday, would not be allowed to be swept under the carpet, despite the attempt by the management of the institution to discredit the petition as the position of a faction of ASUU in the university.

Nurse pulls off baby’s hand during delivery in Ikorodu, Lagos

There was confusion in Odogunyan, Ikorodu area of Lagos State after an auxiliary nurse, identified only as Oyekanmi pulled off the hand of a baby while taking delivery. The police have since arrested the suspect. It was gathered that the victim’s mother, Adeola, was taken to Oyekanmi’s residence last Saturday when she went into labour. Oyekanmi, while attempting to force the delivery, was said to have pulled off the baby’s hand. The baby died when she was rushed to the Ikorodu general hospital, Punch reports. The hospital management then alerted the police on the incident and the suspect was picked up by the police. The source said,  “What happened was that the auxiliary nurse tried to deliver the woman of the baby, during which there was a complication. “But she continued and in the end, the hand of the baby was pulled off while she tried to force the child out from the mother’s womb.

The   military, yesterday, dismissed leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau’s video which purported that the group has not been crushed. Defence Spokesman, Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar dismissed as laughable, the video which the group denied claims by the military that it has been crushed. He said it was nothing but an attempt to deceive the public and create the impression that what does not exist is in place. Speaking to Daily Sun,  Abubakar advised Nigerians to ignore  the video and insisted it was laughable. He stressed that the Sambisa Forest where the sect held fort has been completely taken over by the military. “On what ground would the so-called Shekau speak? We have total control of Sambisa. Budget 2017: Power gets N69.96bn

The Federal Government has allocated over N69.96 billion to the power sector in the 2017 budget proposal. The agencies under the Ministry of Power, to which have been allocated the amount, include the National Rural Electricity Agency, NREA; National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC; National Electricity Management Services Agency, NEMSA; National Power Training Institute, NAPTI; National Electricity Liability Management Limited, NELMCO; Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN)  and National Bulk Electricity Trading, NBET. 2017 budget: 115 Foreign Missions to gulp N48.899bn

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has budgeted over N48. 899 billion on 115 foreign missions abroad in the 2017 budget. Foreign Missions have suffered a huge set back in the past one year due to lack of financial support from the ministry. Washington followed with an allocation of N1.05 billion; London received an allocation of N1.433 billion; Berlin, N743.880 million; and Madrid, N682. 286 million. On the flip side, Nigeria Foreign Mission in Columbo, Sri Lanka, received the least allocation of N259.16 million, followed by the  Mission in Lome, with N252.6 million. Others in this category are Freetown N260.61 million and Spain, with a total allocation of N267. 84 million. FG Declares 26th / 27th December, 2016 And January 2, 2017 As Public Holidays

The Federal Government has declared Monday, Dec. 26, and Tuesday Dec. 27, 2016 as public holidays to mark the Christmas and Boxing Day. Similarly, Monday, Jan. 2, 2017 has also been declared as public holiday to mark the New Year. This was disclosed by the Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau in Abuja on Wednesday. He called on all Christian faithful and Nigerians in general to remain committed and supportive of the Government of President Muhammadu Buhari and urged them to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity and peaceful co-existence across the country. WAEC HAS RELEASED RESULTS FOR 2016 NOV/DEC EXAMS

The West African Examinations Council,WAEC, has released the results of the 2016 Nov/Dec West African Senior School Certificate Examination, (WASSCE). The results were announced by the Head of National Office, Nigeria, Mr Olu Adenipekun yesterday in Lagos. According to him, “A total of 66,497 (Sixty Six Thousand Four Hundred and Ninety Seven) candidates, representing 38.50%, obtained credits in five (5) subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics. “The percentage of candidates that obtained five (5) credits and above including English Language and Mathematics in the WASSCE for Private Candidates in 2014 and 2015 was 29.37% and 20.59% respectively. “19 (Nineteen) visually challenged candidates registered for and sat the examination in Nigeria. WAEC GCE TO BE WRITTEN TWICE A YEAR SAYS WAEC BOSS

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has disclosed that the conduct of its examination for private candidates would be twice in a year with effect from 2017. This was made known by the council Registrar, Dr Iyi Uwadiae, who interacted with newsmen at the Registrar’s Staff Appraisal Committee meeting held on Wednesday in Accra, Ghana. He added that the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates known as the November/December diet for private candidates will now be conducted in January/February and August/September. He said the measure is to ensure that many private candidates, who desire the certificate for various purposes, will have the opportunity of writing the examination and acquire the certificate. XMAS BONANZA AT CROSS RIVER

The Cross River State government is subsidising prices of foodstuff, such as rice, tin tomatoes, groundnut oil and sweet corn, by as much as 40 percent . The subsidy on the foodstuffs, which is already drawing traffic from even neighbouring states to the Tinapa Free Trade Zone where the foodstuffs are being sold, is the first of its kind in the state according to some residents. A bag of rice that goes for between N22,000 and N25,000 in the open market is being sold at N15,000 in Tinapa. Also a pack of tin tomatoes that sells for  N9,000 in the market is being sold at N6000 in Tinapa. Sweet Corn and groundnut oil is being sold are N8,000 and N7,000 repectively as against N11,500 and N11,000 in the open market. BUHARI PRESENTS 2017 BUDGET

Some stakeholders and economic experts in Borno on Wednesday, expressed mixed feelings over the 2017 budget presented by President Muhammadu Buhari. Some said they were confident about the president’s political will, others predicted a rubust economic outlook in 2017, with drastic economic reforms imminent. BUHARI AT THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY COMPLEX FOR 2017 APPROPRIATION BILL

The National Assembly Complex Abuja administrative and commercial activities were paralyzed on Wednesday when President Muhammadu Buhari visited the complex to present the 2017 Appropriation Bill. The President presented the 2017 budget proposal to a joint session of both chambers of the National Assembly. Several members of staff of the National Assembly, especially junior workers, were not allowed into the premises. After entering through these gates, there are two more gates to cross before getting to the National Assembly building and all were manned by list-bearing security personnel who checked through the papers for identification of each entrant. ENUGU STATE TO IMPROVE EDUCATION IN THE STATE

The Enugu State Government says it has leveraged on the ‘Radio School’ programme of the South Saharan Social Development Organisation (SSDO) to improve education in the state. The state Commissioner of Education, Prof. Uche Eze, said this in Enugu on Wednesday during a town hall meeting. The radio school programme of SSDO involves the broadcast of selected subjects by trained and experienced teachers, while the target students listen and direct questions to their class teachers. The commissioner, who was represented by the Director of Schools in the ministry, Mr Frank Okoro, said that the state government was open to such collaborations with development partners. Eze said that radio school broadcast had been embedded in the school curriculum as an in-school programme and “it has improved mass literacy across the state as most people listen from their homes”. Over 400 workers of the State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti sack has been ordered by Ekiti state government on the grounds that their employment did not follow due process.
