JAMB: confusion over examination centres

There is confusion over the allocation of centres to candidates of the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation (UTM) examination next month by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) to states outside their residences. Investigations revealed that the examination body has started issuing centres and seat numbers to candidates. The slip containing the centre and seat numbers, according to checks by our correspondent also contain the examination towns where candidates will seat for the forthcoming examination. The exact names of the centre, according to JAMB, will be sent to the candidates’ email boxes in dues course. However, the online publication of candidates’ examination towns by the body appeared to have been greeted with more confusion ahead of this year’s UTM examination. Mock JAMB Exam: FG urges free movement in states

The Federal Government has urged all State Governments to allow free movement of people on Saturday, to enable students to participate in JAMB’s Voluntary Mock Examination nationwide. In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said the mock examination was being conducted ahead of the 2017 UTME. Mohammed, in the statement signed by his Special Adviser, Mr Segun Adeyemi said the mock examinations were to enable interested students to familiarise themselves with the Computer-Based Test (CBT) environment.

NEW NAME FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS

A team of Nigerian linguists and medical experts have adopted new names for HIV, AIDS and prostitutes in Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba in order to reduce the scourge of stigmatisation. A statement on Saturday by Prof. Herbert Igboanusi of the University of Ibadan, said the adoption was to eliminate stigmatisation and discrimination of persons living with HIV and AIDS. He said that the study adopted the following names as more appropriate for the HIV/AIDS. HIV in Igbo is Ori Nchekwa Ahụ meaning something that fights or weakens the body immunity while AIDS is Mmịnwụ, a condition that causes emaciation. According to the statement the Yorùbá, appropriate term for HIV is Kòkòrò Apa Sójà Ara (KASA) meaning sickness that which kills the body immunity while AIDS is ààrùn ìsọdọ̀lẹ àjẹsára a sickness that completely weakens body immune system. The Chief Executive Officer at the National Mathematical Center (NMC), Prof. Stephen Onah, has blamed dismal performance of students in WAEC and NECO examinations in successive years on unqualified teachers in Mathematics. JAMB extends registration by two weeks

The Joint Admissions and MatriculationS Board yesterday announced extension of registration for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) by two weeks. The extension covers April 19 – 5th May. The examination body also announced suspension of the conduct of its mock examination scheduled to hold yesterday in some selected centers across the country indefinitely. JAMB registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, told reporters in Abuja the postponement of the UTME mock exam was due to failure from its technical partners. He also announced shift in the conduct of UTME scheduled to begin on 6th May.
